After completing the project House, I decided to put together a Do It Yourself book on how to create it. The book features step by step instructions explaining how to construct the House. It also provides the authentic materials needed for the job. Stylistically, the book is based on the classic Sunset DIY series, published in California. MIM refers to a fictitious technological innovation developed in the United States that enables stationary relocation. With MIM technology the location is transported from one place to another rather than the object. The book also includes information on how to build a car that uses MIM technology.
The project is a comment both on the art world and on the social and physical character of the United States. It is inspired by the ideas of writers such as Baudriar and ____ as well as my own experience of living in the US and driving across the country on interstate highways. The book is a comment on the uniformity of the North American landscape, which has been taken over by huge commercial chains and franchises that have emptied out the distinctive character of different regions within the country. The book also reflects on the popular Do It Yourself culture as part of the the American Dream and the values attributed to the home and the car within this ideal lifestyle.
